Johann-Joachim Winckelmann

On December 9, 1717, one of the most important figures in intellectual history was born in Stendal: Johann Joachim Winckelmann. He is considered the founder of scientific archaeology and art history. From 1743 to 1748, he worked as vice-principal at the Latin school in Seehausen, where he taught ancient languages, geometry and logic. This position turned out to be a traumatic experience for him, as the scholar proved to be overqualified and too ambitious for the conditions at the Seehausen school at the time. He came into conflict with his principal, who was annoyed by the superiority of his deputy, as well as with the pupils' parents, who had no interest in turning their children into scholars. Winckelmann thus left the Altmark with experiences that shaped him for the rest of his life. The former schoolhouse and current parish hall, built in 1795, stands on the site where the Latin school, where Winckelmann worked, was located for several centuries. In his honorable memory, many squares, streets and buildings in the region are named after him, including today's Seehäuser Community School.
