Bömenzien border tower

In 1952, the GDR declared the demarcation line and the previously open "green border" to be the state border. This marked the beginning of the securing and fortification of the inner-German border as a military barrier stretching 1,393 km. The more than 500 border towers built along the border served to monitor the border installations and prevent crossings. Since the border installations were almost completely dismantled after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Bömenzien border tower is one of the few monuments that remind us of the Iron Curtain and thus serve as a memorial for all future generations. One of the former 2,735 GDR border posts (here No. 305) can also be found here on the small road bridge towards Nienwalde. The former border now forms the Green Belt, which remained virtually untouched for almost three decades due to the closure and military surveillance and has developed into a refuge and valuable habitat for rare animals and plants. Today, it represents both a chain of biotopes worthy of special protection and a living monument to German contemporary history. How
to get there:
Approx. 3 km from Bömenzien on a hill on Nienwalder Weg, which connects Bömenzien and Nienwalde.
