This year's cycling season was officially opened on Sunday with the traditional Elbe Cycling Day in the district of Stendal. Numerous cyclists took advantage of the spring-like weather to actively start the new cycling season together and set an example for sustainable mobility.
In keeping with this, the focus is already on the next sporting highlight: the district-wide city cycling competition, which starts on Wednesday, June 3. For the first time, the district of Stendal is coordinating the campaign and is calling on citizens, clubs, schools, companies and institutions to take part. This is a unique opportunity to draw attention to yourself as a "newcomer" municipality. Therefore: make visible now how much the citizens of the district of Stendal cycle.
The first teams have already registered and are eagerly awaiting the start of the three-week competition. The aim is to cover as many everyday kilometers as possible by bike from 3 to 23 June - whether on the way to work, on business trips or during leisure time. Every kilometer ridden counts.
By taking part in city cycling, cyclists not only make an active contribution to environmental and climate protection, but also promote their own health. Regular cycling strengthens the heart and circulation, improves fitness and offers an easy way to integrate exercise into everyday life. At the same time, every kilometer avoided by car helps to reduce CO₂ emissions and sustainably protect the environment.
The district of Stendal is therefore hoping for broad participation and many motivated teams, who together will set a strong example for climate-friendly mobility and an active lifestyle. Last year, committed teams from the region were already able to achieve impressive mileages - and the aim is to build on this this year.
Background
With its international City Cycling competition, Climate Alliance Services invites all citizens and members of local parliaments to pedal and set an example for increased promotion of cycling. In teams, they are to collect as many bicycle kilometers as possible for their municipality on 21 consecutive days between May and September. The campaign aims to sensitize citizens to cycling in everyday life and raise awareness of the issues of bicycle use and bicycle traffic planning in local parliaments. With the "RADar!" reporting platform and the "BIKE MONITOR" portal, which provides participating municipalities with scientifically prepared cycling data, the campaign also includes two elements that can be used to improve the cycling infrastructure in a very concrete way and with the involvement of citizens.
