Bowel cancer usually develops from benign growths in the intestinal mucosa, known as polyps. Around 90 percent of people with bowel cancer are over the age of 50, but younger people can also be affected. However, a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent it in good time. This includes a healthy diet with lots of fiber and little red meat/sausage, regular exercise (30 to 60 minutes a day), avoiding nicotine and drinking only small amounts of alcohol. Obesity should be avoided.
At yesterday's lecture, which was once again attended by many interested people at Seehausen Hospital, Dr. Dr. Daniel Kügler, Head Physician at the Clinic for Internal Medicine, explained the risk factors, how a colonoscopy is performed, used clear images to show the difference between benign polyps and malignant tumors and explained the prospects of recovery at different stages. He made it clear that bowel cancer screening is extremely important, because the earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances of recovery. Women aged 50 and over can have a colonoscopy as a preventive examination. "Prevention is better than cure," Dr. Kügler emphasized. After the presentation, many visitors took the opportunity to ask specific questions.
