This year’s City Cycling event, which is being organized for the first time by the Stendal district, is off to a good start. After the first five days, 85,000 kilometers have already been cycled. More than 1,500 cyclists—both children and adults—from across the district have been pedaling to achieve this. There is now an additional incentive for them to participate: The Stendal district is offering prizes in five categories. The winners will be honored after the campaign is evaluated. To this end, the district administration is receiving support from one partner per category.
The top prize goes to the person who has cycled the most kilometers by the end of the 21-day campaign. The Roland Pharmacy in Stendal, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, is organizing the event. The Altmark Community Foundation will award a prize to one participant. However, the main focus is on the next generation: Together with Stadtwerke Stendal, the daycare center with the most kilometers will be selected; together with the engineering firm WSTC, the elementary school with the most kilometers cycled will be selected; and together with Digital Media Altmark, the secondary school with the most City Cycling kilometers will be selected.
Anyone can participate. All you need to do is register on the website www.stadtradeln.de. If you already have a City Cycling account, you can reactivate it. After registering, you’ll select the participating municipality. At this point, cyclists have the option to join a team in one of the participating municipalities within the district or to join a team directly under the Stendal district. If there isn’t a suitable team yet, both options allow for the creation of new teams. This requires a minimum of two cyclists.
There are no costs for cyclists. The "City Cycling 2026" campaign is supported by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs and the Saxony-Anhalt Bicycle-Friendly Municipalities Working Group.
Background
With its international City Cycling competition, Climate Alliance Services invites all citizens and members of local parliaments to pedal and set an example for increased cycling promotion. In teams, they are to collect as many bicycle kilometers as possible for their municipality on 21 consecutive days. The campaign aims to sensitize citizens to cycling in everyday life and raise awareness of the issues of bicycle use and bicycle traffic planning in local parliaments. With the "RADar!" reporting platform and the "BIKE MONITOR" portal, which provides the participating municipalities with scientifically prepared cycling data, the campaign also includes two elements that can be used to improve the cycling infrastructure in a very concrete way and with the involvement of citizens.
